Free video caption tools
Pricing notes as of October 9, 2026. Figures can change — confirm on each vendor’s site before you buy.
People searching for a free caption generator usually want one of three things: no watermark, no short time cap, and a file they can post. Those are different products, and the limits are easy to mix up.
FrameCast covers the local file. Cloud editors cover the browser tab. Share-link limits are a third number, and they are not the same as the caption limit.
Side-by-side
| Factor | FrameCast | Cloud editors |
|---|---|---|
| FrameCast | On-device captions for the whole local video. No caption time cap in the Mac app, the iPhone editor, or the web editor. Live captions on Mac need macOS 26 or later. | Free with 25 share links; Pro $5.00/mo, Team $7.00/seat/mo (billed yearly) |
| Kapwing | Free auto-subtitling up to 10 minutes, using credits. Free exports up to 4 minutes, with a watermark, at 720p. | Free is $0: exports include a watermark, videos up to 4 minutes, 720p, 5 GB of storage, and auto-subtitling up to 10 minutes (credits). Pro is $16 per member per month billed annually ($192/year), with exports up to 2 hours, 200 GB, and auto-subtitling up to 1,000 minutes a month. Business is $50 per member per month billed annually ($600/year). Kapwing also describes itself as an editor for videos, GIFs, images, and audio. |
| Descript | A different job: FrameCast captions the recording; Descript edits from the transcript. | Free tier available. Hobbyist $24/month or $16/month billed annually; Creator $35/$24; Business $65/$50 — all per person/month. Enterprise is custom. |
| VEED | FrameCast captions run on device. VEED is a separate browser editor, not scored here. | The homepage describes VEED as an AI video platform that generates a video from an idea without a camera, adds subtitles, and applies brand colours, fonts, logos, and voice. The pricing page said you can start free and upgrade. It did not show plan prices or caption limits in the text we could read. |
| CapCut | FrameCast is a screen-recording studio with free local captions, not a template editor. | The public pricing page listed Pro at USD 19.99 and Ultra at USD 79, plus a USD 12.49 figure, and said displayed pricing is for reference only. The text we could read did not say which figure is monthly or yearly, or what the free plan includes. Confirm on the page before you buy. |
How to choose without guessing
Stay local when the video is long
Record or import on the Mac, iPhone, or web editor and caption the whole timeline. Live captions, transcripts, and Apple Intelligence script tools need macOS 26 or later. The web editor uses its own on-device speech model and does not need macOS 26.
Read the share limit separately
A free share link can be up to 30 minutes at 1080p. Pro shares up to 4 hours in 4K.
Pay when the link is the product
Captions are not the upsell. Pro: $6.00/month or $60.00/year — unlimited links, 4K, viewer insights, link controls, branding.
Fair tradeoffs
A cloud editor can still be the better caption tool if you need a shared project, a language pair FrameCast’s on-device model handles poorly, or a phone template workflow. This page only quotes limits that were on a vendor page we fetched, plus Descript figures already cited on the September 26, 2026 comparisons.
