macOS permissions for screen recording

Most “it won’t record” moments on Mac are permission gaps. FrameCast only asks for what each feature needs — but Screen Recording and a few others require a quit and reopen after you allow them.

macOS 26.5 or later. Open the studio from the menu bar; it lists each permission and can jump to the matching System Settings pane.

Permission map

Grant only what you are using today.

Camera — floating camera overlay
Microphone — live captions and recorded voice
Screen Recording — preview and record a crop of the display (quit and reopen after allowing)
Speech Recognition — caption overlays and brief transcripts
Input Monitoring + Accessibility — key overlay while you demonstrate (quit and reopen after allowing)

Blank preview or black recording

Confirm Screen Recording is on for FrameCast in System Settings → Privacy & Security. After toggling it, quit FrameCast completely from the menu bar and open it again.

If the camera is missing, check Camera permission the same way. Face tracking and shaped looks need a live camera feed.

Install path reminder

Download the signed, notarized disk image, drag FrameCast to Applications, then launch from Applications. Prefer automatic updates? Use the Mac App Store listing instead.
