Transcribe a video to text

Turn the speech in a recording into text on the Text track, on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded and it costs nothing.

Where to find it

Editor → Edit tab with nothing selected → Text track → Transcribe speech

How to do it

  1. Click Canvas above the preview so nothing is selected, then find the Text track card on the Edit tab.

  2. Choose the Spoken language. The Mac can’t detect it from the sound.

  3. Leave Listen to on Original speech, or pick Preview mix or Selected audio clip.

  4. Press Transcribe speech. The lines appear on the Text row of the timeline.

  5. If Review uncertain passages appears, press it to jump to words the recognizer wasn’t sure of, and correct them in the Text line card.

Good to know

  • Needs macOS 26 or later. Transcribing again replaces the Text track; Undo restores it.
  • Text track lines are an editing guide. To show words on the video, add captions on the CC row.
