Scrolling screenshots and screenshot stitching on Mac, free

macOS’s screenshot keys capture only what fits on the screen. FrameCast adds ⇧⌘1: drag over a web page, chat, or document, scroll through it, and get one tall screenshot. Or drag out several areas, from any window or app, and join them top to bottom or side by side.

It’s free, runs on your Mac, and needs no account. The result is an ordinary screenshot: in the corner, copied by default, kept on the Screenshots page, ready to mark up, and searchable by the words in it.

Take a scrolling screenshot of a long page

Press ⇧⌘1 and choose Scrolling, or press S. Drag over the part of the window that scrolls, then scroll down through it at a steady pace while a small panel counts the height. Press Done, Return, or ⇧⌘1 again to keep it.

FrameCast matches each new frame to the last, so only what scrolled into view is added. A header or a bar that stays put, like a chat’s text box or a shop’s order bar, appears once instead of repeating down the image.

  • Any app that scrolls: browsers, chats, mail, documents, and code
  • Up to 32,000 pixels tall; the panel says when it’s full
  • If it loses its place, scroll back up a little, then more slowly
  1. Press ⇧⌘1 and choose Scrolling, or press S. From the capture bar, choose More → Scrolling Capture.

  2. Drag over the part of the window that scrolls, such as a web page, chat, or document.

  3. Scroll down through it at a steady pace. The panel counts the height so far.

  4. Press Done, Return, or ⇧⌘1 again. The tall screenshot appears in the corner like any other, copied and kept on the Screenshots page.

Stitch several screenshots into one

Press ⇧⌘1 and choose Several Areas, or press A. Drag out the first area, press Add Area or ⇧⌘1 for the next, and keep going. Areas can come from different windows, apps, or displays. Choose top to bottom or side by side and the preview updates as you go; Undo drops the last area.

Use it for a before-and-after, a bug report that needs two windows, or three app screens side by side for a slide.

  1. Press ⇧⌘1 and choose Several Areas, or press A. From the capture bar, choose More → Stitch Areas.

  2. Drag over the first area. The panel shows it in a preview.

  3. Press Add Area, or ⇧⌘1, and drag over the next one. Repeat for as many as you need; Undo removes the last.

  4. Pick top to bottom or side by side with the two layout buttons, and watch the preview change.

  5. Press Done. The joined screenshot appears in the corner like any other, copied and kept on the Screenshots page.

Then copy it, mark it up, or send a link

The stitched image lands in the corner like any FrameCast screenshot. Drag it into another app, add arrows, numbered steps, and blur in markup, or upload it and copy a link. Screenshot links don’t count against your free video links.

Compared with macOS, CleanShot X, Shottr, and Snagit

macOS’s Screenshot app has no scrolling capture and can’t join screenshots. CleanShot X, Shottr, and Snagit include scrolling capture in paid or freemium screenshot apps. FrameCast includes it free, alongside screen recording, video editing, text capture, and clipboard history.

Questions

How do I take a scrolling screenshot on a Mac?
macOS doesn’t include one. With FrameCast, press ⇧⌘1, choose Scrolling, drag over the part that scrolls, scroll down through it, and press Done.
Is FrameCast’s scrolling screenshot free?
Yes. Screenshots, scrolling screenshots, and stitching are free in the Mac app, with no account and no watermark. Uploading a screenshot to share as a link needs sign-in.
Can I put two screenshots side by side?
Yes. Press ⇧⌘1, choose Several Areas, drag out each area, and pick the side by side layout before you press Done.
Does it work in any app?
Yes. It captures what’s on screen, so any window that scrolls works: a browser, a chat, mail, a document, or code.

Up to 32,000 pixels. The panel tells you when it’s full; press Done to keep it.
What if ⇧⌘1 doesn’t do anything?
⇧⌘1 is the default while Replace macOS screenshot shortcuts is on. With it off, press ⇧⌥⌘1, or choose your own key on the Shortcuts page. You can also open the capture bar with ⇧⌘5 and choose More, then Scrolling Capture or Stitch Areas.
Which Mac do I need?
macOS 14 or later.
