Show live captions on screen

Turn your speech into on-screen captions as you talk, transcribed on your Mac. Captions are recorded into the take. Needs macOS 26.

Where to find it

Studio → Overlays → Captions

How to do it

  1. Open the studio, choose Overlays, and press Captions. A caption bar appears on screen.

  2. Make sure Captions is on (⌥⌘;). Allow Microphone and Speech Recognition if macOS asks.

  3. Speak. Your words appear on the bar, and under the caption settings in the studio.

  4. Use the Keep … words stepper for how many words show, and Caption linger for how long they stay after you stop.

Good to know

  • Live captions need macOS 26 or later. The first time, the on-device speech model downloads.
  • Speech is transcribed on your Mac.
  • Captions shown on screen are part of the recording. To add captions afterwards instead, use the editor.
