FrameCast vs CloudConvert
Pricing notes as of October 9, 2026. Figures can change — confirm on each vendor’s site before you buy.
CloudConvert is an online converter. You upload a file, including MP4 to GIF, and it processes the job in the cloud. FrameCast is a recorder and editor. GIF is one export format in the Mac and iPhone apps.
The useful difference is the upload. CloudConvert needs the file on their servers. FrameCast renders the GIF on the device. CloudConvert’s free plan also meters credits and processing time. FrameCast does not meter the export.
Side-by-side
| Factor | FrameCast | CloudConvert |
|---|---|---|
| How a GIF is made | Open the take, set Format to GIF, then Export GIF. It stays on the Mac or iPhone. The web editor cannot write a GIF. | Upload an MP4, WEBM, AVI, or another supported video. The MP4 to GIF page says you can set resolution, quality, and file size. |
| Free limits | No exporter duration cap. File size grows with length, frame rate, resolution, and colors. Audio is dropped. | €0, 10 credits a day, 1 GB max file, 5 minutes of processing time, 5 concurrent tasks, low priority. |
| What a credit means | GIF export does not use credits. Voice credits are only for generated voice-over. | A conversion typically costs at least one credit, then more for each extra minute of processing. Slider prices for paid credits were not readable. |
| Captions | Captions on the timeline are drawn into the GIF frames. | Not described on the MP4 to GIF page we fetched. |
| After the GIF | A free share link can be up to 30 minutes at 1080p. Pro shares up to 4 hours in 4K. | CloudConvert returns a file. It is not a watch-page product. |
When to skip the upload
The recording never has to leave the device
A customer demo or a lesson can become a GIF without a 1 GB upload and without waiting on a converter queue.
Processing time is not the same as clip length
CloudConvert’s free plan lists 5 minutes of processing, which is how long the job may run, not a published cap on the GIF’s playback length. FrameCast has no playback-length cap. A long GIF is still a large file.
A GIF is not a share link
Use the GIF in a doc or a chat. When someone should watch the full video, export MP4 and share a link. Pro: $6.00/month or $60.00/year — unlimited links, 4K, viewer insights, link controls, branding.
Fair tradeoffs
CloudConvert is the better tool when you need a one-off conversion between dozens of formats and you are fine uploading the file. FrameCast does not convert Office documents, and it does not write a GIF from the web editor.
